There is a growing trend evolving, where danger to company information and credibility are under threat not by rival companies or independent enemies trying to force their way into their networks to disrupt or steal for gain or excitement but by someone closer.
Dramatic but in an age where information means money large corporations now consider the biggest threat to their information and image being from within, from the employees they hire. More and more companies are using software that monitors their networks and record what acts their users perform whilst logged in. These activities can range from recording the emails users send and receive to the amount of time spent using the internet for personal use, even what sites are visited. Some are even monitoring activities outside of work, there are a growing amount of employee dismissals as a result of comments left on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace that the companies deemed inappropriate or that brought the company name into disrepute.(Three people where i currently work were dismissed this week for the same reason)
Statistics show a growing increase in large companies monitoring their employees but not all do, further more there is little research available as to how many small to medium enterprises (SME’s) monitor their employees or whether they deem it important to do so.
I am currently conducting research for my dissertation into the views of small to medium businesses regarding monitoring of employees. As my research and dissertation progress I will be uploading my finding and structuring this blog into an easy to read, informative guide for SME’s and larger companies who don’t already monitor their users.
